How to compress PDF to 200KB

    1. Choose your PDF. The target is already set to 200 KB.
    2. Press Compress PDF. PDF1 tries the gentlest method first and only goes further if it has to.
    3. Download the file and check it reads well, then upload it.

    Good to know

The compressor works in three steps and stops as soon as the file fits. First it rewrites the PDF’s structure losslessly. Then it shrinks the photos and scans inside the file while leaving the text alone. Only if that still isn’t enough does it redraw each page as an image, at the highest resolution that fits in 200 KB.

PDF1 aims for under 200,000 bytes, not 204,800. Some forms count a kilobyte as 1,000 bytes and others as 1,024, so a file under 200,000 bytes passes either way.

Where a 200 KB limit comes up

Online application forms for jobs, college admissions, scholarships, exams and government services often cap each document at 200 KB. The documents they ask for are usually scans or phone photos of certificates, mark sheets, ID cards and address proofs, which come out at 1–5 MB straight from a scanner app. That is the gap this page closes.

A one- or two-page scan nearly always fits in 200 KB and stays clearly readable. A 10-page scan can fit too, but each page then gets about 18 KB, so small print may blur. If the form allows it, upload long documents as several files.

    Questions

    Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. PDF1 runs the whole job inside your browser tab with JavaScript and WebAssembly. The page has no upload endpoint, and its security policy blocks connections to other servers, so the file stays on your device. You can even disconnect from the internet once the page has loaded.

Will my PDF still be readable at 200 KB?

For one to three pages, yes: there is room for a clear scan at around 120–200 dpi. The more pages there are, the less room each one gets. PDF1 always tries to keep the text as real, sharp text first, and only turns pages into images if that’s the only way to reach the size.

Why is my file under 200 KB on my computer but rejected by the form?

Some forms count 1 KB as 1,024 bytes and some as 1,000, and Windows and macOS display sizes differently too. PDF1 keeps the file under 200,000 bytes, which passes either rule.

Can I compress to a different size?

Yes. Change the target box to any size, such as 150 KB or 300 KB. There are ready-made pages for 100 KB, 500 KB and 1 MB too.

What if it can’t get under 200 KB?

You still get the smallest version it could make, with a note. Splitting the PDF into parts, deleting unneeded pages or ticking Grayscale usually closes the gap.
