Good to know
Most documents reach 500 KB without being turned into images. Reports, statements and forms that are large because of embedded photos or scanned pages are shrunk by recompressing those images, while text, links and form fields stay exactly as they were.
PDF1 keeps the file below 500,000 bytes, so it passes size checks whichever way they count a kilobyte.
Typical 500 KB uploads
A 500 KB limit is common for supporting documents in visa, insurance, loan and university applications, and on many company HR and expense portals. It comfortably holds a 5–15 page scan at a resolution that is pleasant to read, or a typed report full of photos once the photos are resized.
How the size is reached
- Lossless clean-up. The file is restructured with the open-source qpdf engine. Nothing visible changes.
- Image recompression. Large photos and scans are resized and re-encoded, trying gentle settings first. Text and vector graphics aren’t touched.
- Page images, if needed. Only if steps 1 and 2 can’t reach 500 KB are pages redrawn as images, at the best resolution that fits.
Questions
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. PDF1 runs the whole job inside your browser tab with JavaScript and WebAssembly. The page has no upload endpoint, and its security policy blocks connections to other servers, so the file stays on your device. You can even disconnect from the internet once the page has loaded.
My file is 8 MB. Can it get under 500 KB?
Usually, yes. Big PDFs are almost always big because of photos or high-resolution scans, and those shrink a lot. A 30-page phone scan is the hardest case, and may need splitting.
Will links and form fields survive?
Yes, as long as the size is reached in the first two steps, which is most of the time. The download note tells you which method was used.
Is 500 KB the same as 0.5 MB?
Yes. For a 1 MB limit, use the 1 MB page or type 1 MB in the target box.
